First and foremost you need skill. This isn’t something that you can at 18 decide I’m going to be a racing driver as I just got my driver's license. Lewis Hamilton the current best driver on the grid started karting at 8 years old. He had a natural talent but not a lot of budget and it took years to hone that craft into the skill you see today.

As a kid, he made an impression with Ron Dennis the CEO of McLaren, who were the best team at the time, pre Ferrari dominance, and managed to get picked up by them. These days, we have extremely good simulations of tracks and cars in games like iRacing and the Codemasters F1 series, but you can’t just simulate alone, you need to get noticed in the real world.

If you’re lucky to get noticed by a team, you will need to compete in the lower series. Modern Formula One rules require all drivers to be of a certain standard to qualify for the Super Licence required. The basic rules are you must score a minimum of 40 points in races over a three-year period in lower tiers, be at least 18 years old when entering Formula One and have completed 300 laps in a Formula One Car. This is usually handled by “getting noticed” and invited by the team to practice. The easiest way to get noticed is to win lower tiers starting with Karting, and working your way up to Formula Two, the tier below Formula One.

If you look at all of the 2019 drivers on the grid with the exception of Max Verstappen and Alexander Albon, all of them have won a lower tier championship. Winning a lower tier championship is the best way to progress.

These days, it’s almost impossible to succeed without financial backing. It can be done, however it’s extremely unlikely. So you will need to get sponsorship and backing for your “brand”. On the My Next Guest series with David Letterman on Netflix, Lewis Hamilton’s parents state they were in pretty much financial ruin getting their son to Formula One. And that’s true for most of the drivers. Of the 20 that are lucky and skilled enough to get there, there are hundreds and thousands who do not make it. So once you can demonstrate you have what it takes to succeed financial backing comes easier.

Sergio Perez and Lance Stroll are two current “Pay Drivers” whose sponsorship or family wealth pay for their seats in F1. This is an alternative route to getting noticed on pure skill and talent. You will still need to meet the minimum requirements of the FIA as mentioned above, however your options are extremely limited. Of the teams who would accept Pay Drivers you’re looking at Williams, Racing Point and Haas. The other teams commercial success is linked to their drivers who have all proved they are capable of winning championships if given the right car. But you would also have to compete with the current drivers’ contracts and relationships with the team. After the 2019 Canadian Grand Prix, I would bet that Kevin Magnussen is on thin ice with the team.

Finally and probably most important, you will need the fitness required for Formula One. Drivers lose an average 4KG during a race. So you need to be physically fit for that much weight loss in less than two hours. For someone who is unfit that could send them into shock and cause serious health problems or death.

One of the leading causes of aortic dissection[1] is caused by car accidents which your chances of having one increase dramatically on a race track, especially competing with others. F1 drivers train on an unrelenting schedule. You would see stories like 2009 World Champion Jenson Button regularly competing in Triathlons and Marathons between race weekends just because he was that fit! Having this fitness allows you to perform at a higher level for longer. The only person who knows your bodily capabilities is you, so only you can determine if you have what it takes to compete at that level.

First you need to think carefully about starting out in F1. It is a very competitive and expensive sport. It also very time consuming.

Now to start your journey, you need to begin with karting, the most common entry into racing. And not just any karting, proper professional karting but be warned it is not for the faint hearted. If you don't want to do karting yourself then another option is to join a karting school, there aren't many in India which are recognized by the FIA but you'll find plenty outside, eg: Silverstone Racing Academy.

After this you go higher up the ladder and race in bigger faster cars. Formula Ford. These mainly happen in the UK so each time you race you need to travel there.

Then after this you climb up to the category which either breaks you or makes you. GP3. Here, you get a taste of what lies in formula 1 racing. The cars are big and extremely fast. So again, not for the faint hearted.

After successfully completing GP3 you move onto Formula 3, it is basically the same cars but different rules and regulations. Side note, GP3 - GP2 is very very important as a driver as you can gain reputation by winning and this will make it easier for to be picked up by teams.

So after Formula 3 you move up to GP2. This is were it gets very competitive, on track and as well as off it. This is the part where drivers get promoted to F1 so everyone wants to get in and it becomes a very chaotic scene. So then after you've successfully managed to get through GP2 you are now in Formula 1 racing. The absolute best and extreme form of racing and engineering. You race in cars that can easily speed up to 400kmph+ (new cars). This is where you become popular and earn big bucks that's if you're good at it.

Well, you need to be about 7 to 12 years old for a start and have the ability to prove yourself as a winner in go karting, then lower class open wheel cars and be a champion in at least 2 classes by the time you are 17, then you need a sponsor or someone with a lot of money to back you in F3 or one of the other development classes then be in the top 3 for a couple of years, better still win a couple more championships, then you need to catch the eye of one of the few teams in F1 to give you testing and maybe a development role if you qualify for a super license, then you need to hope that there is an opening within the first few years after you achieve all this. Otherwise its a piece of cake.
